Dials are still missing as I need to get the special stuff I print on first.
(Matte layout foil for circuit board design which can be used in laser printers)

The warning lights will be moved outside as I don't want to put more holes in the film.

Re: Gauges light modified to red..

Welcome across Doublehead.

This is quite an interesting mod and would be good to see in-situ.
I was considering the same one recently but thought where will this bulb changing end.
Have you changed the binnacle ones already?

Re: Gauges light modified to red..

The original bulbs stay in, as the light up the dials as well as the pointers. I will just use the signal for the warning lamps for fuel and water and put them elsewhere. Not sure where yet.
As I already put the gauges back in the car I'll get some nice pictures when it's dark.
I'm ok with the result as I changed the illumination of the fog light switches to white. It would be perfect, if I could change the illumination of the a/c module to red, which is rather difficult, as it's printed in three coats from black to white to green. Just Putting red bulbs behind it would look rather strange.

The stuff which actually brings the red colour is this:

Phosphor coated paper which lights up. Needs a small inverter device which now sits behind the gauges.
The inverter is connected to one of the bulb holders on the back. The original dials are just stick-on and were removed.

I'll do more pictures when I put the new dials in. Still thinking of ways to make them look a bit different from the original ones.

Will also put up the images of the scanned original dials, in case someone wants to have a play.

Re: Gauges light modified to red..

I'm not really decided yet on how I want them dials to look.

Here are the scans:

Fuel dial: 52mm wide, 52.5mm high

Water dial: 49mm wide (on the widest bit on the right side); 52.5mm high

Clock dial: 53.5mm wide; 52.5mm high

Measured with calliper gauge, so should be accurate.

Re: Gauges light modified to red..

I had a 147 before the Spider and loved that everything was in Italian, so benzina has to be on the fuel gauge Just benzina though

Do as I say, not as I do

I think I like it like this.

Re: Gauges light modified to red..

I spent some time designing some cleaner dials for
a VW Lupo I used to own.

I went to various print shops and none could offer me a (cost effective) solution
to being able to print new dials.

The dials done look fatastic!

I very much approve of the switch to white and the use of Italian on guages.

I'll be watch this very closely as I would still like to produce the design
I did for the Lupo guages.

Top work, CG

Re: Gauges light modified to red..

Great looking dials
I definitely approve of the change to white dials.

I look into doing this on a VW Lupo awhile back, I designed the new clock faces
but none of the print shops I went to could not offer a (cost effective) solution to printing white onto a translucent
material.

I'd definitely be interested in more information on the matte layout foil for laser printers if you find it.

I'll be keeping an eye on this, intrigued to see the results.

Re: Gauges light modified to red..

Small changes of plan: Printer ate the "dark" version and crumpled the sheet so switched to this:

The hole in the middle is already cut out of the foil, need holes for the warning lights in the glowy-stuff, probably I'll be using a 5mm drill for this.

conrad uk sells the same foil I used, can be used in any laser printer:
(big black areas in the print might lead to crumbling of the foil and paper jam in the printer )
Link

I also found an online-shop you can send DXF-files to and they cut out your design with laser in stainless steel.

You do realise that you'll have a scary orange face in the dark?

I'll have a picture taken later on today to see how it looks.
